Strengths and Challenges of Implementing Physiotherapy in an HIV Community-Based Care Setting: A Qualitative Study of Perspectives of People Living with HIV and Healthcare Providers

The needs of people living with HIV (PLWH) who have access to antiretroviral therapy shifted from hospital community care; however, little is known about physiotherapy within community-based care. Our aim was understand strengths and challenges implementing an interprofessional day health program in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed inductive content analysis. Fifteen PLWH 5 healthcare providers participated. Strengths included improved fulfilling unmet need for rehabilitation; tailored approach physiotherapy; co-location communication, coordination, engagement outcomes (i.e. function, psychosocial outcomes, quality life). Challenges related managing expectations; variable attendance at visits; complex diverse PLWH. Results may be transferable other care settings that provide multi-morbidity.
